“Are you okay?” The words are being thrown around left, right, and centre today. The school children are wearing yellow. Businesses send out emails to their employees. Supermarket and retail employees sport their yellow wristbands. If only people took it seriously every day, instead of just one day a year.
I spent most of today busying myself until this evening, and now I have time to sit and reflect. Someone said to me a while ago that they have absolutely no clue how someone can feel so utterly hopeless and desperate to the point of considering suicide. I tried to give some sort of explanation, to try to help her ‘get it’, but it was no use. People can’t understand unless they’ve been there. And when I tell you I’ve been there, I really mean I’ve been there. I have talked a friend out of suicide. I have been hospitalised for being ‘acutely suicidal’. And I have lost a friend to suicide. And naturally, R U OK Day hits differently when you have lost someone to suicide.
There has always been a massive stigma surrounding mental illness and suicide. But I believe over the last few years, we have made great progress in breaking down the stigma. We still have a way to go, but we are making progress. The thing is, this progress needs to be implemented more than one day a year. How many other days do you ask your friends if they’re okay? How often do you check in with your parents, or your siblings? How often do you check on your work colleagues? And are you okay?
For those of you who are silently battling the blues, are visited by or wrestle with the black dog, suffer from depression or anxiety, or however you want to put it, I see you. I see you and I hear you. And I will continue to be a voice for you. I know how hard it is to speak out, and my voice still shakes when I do. But I will always speak out for you, because I have been where you are. You don’t have to leave, you are safe, and things can be okay again. I am living proof of that, and you can be too. There is so much hope. Here are a list of services for you, both online and on the phone:

I will continue to share these, because there is no knowing when someone in need may stumble across it. Someone looking for a sign not to end things. Someone looking to help a friend. Someone struggling to support someone with poor mental health. Someone seeking understanding. Anyone.
I don’t have much else to say, however I have one last thing to share with you tonight. For those of you who are struggling to understand the battle that so many of us face, and for those of you who know the battle and desperately want to be understood, please watch this video of the story I Had a Black Dog, and His Name was Depression.
Always know that you are seen, someone understands, and you are loved more than ever. Check in with your friends. My inbox is open if you need it. Stay alive, please.
Love,
Julie
